We love PC gaming

At the beginning

In 1999, before we open our first internet cafe, Not Only Internet, we asked ourselves, “People play games at home, and they still want to play games in internet cafes, what is the single most important reason?" We thought If we can find the answer for this question and evolve and keep improving our business around that, we might be able to build a business gamers love for 10 years, 20 years, 50 years or even longer. Just like we drink beer at home, but sometimes we simply want choose a bar and have a couple of drinks there. Our answer to the question is, "Gamers want to be among the people who they share the same interest with. They could be existing friends, they could also be people who live just nearby." And that feeling became something we want to build a business on.

2000

In early 2000, we opened our first internet cafe, it had 20 seats, it’s on King St. Newtown (2042), and it’s called it Not Only Internet. Very soon, the business was running at its peak capacity, since we are a bunch of gamers ourselves, we started to realise the importance of a good gaming atmosphere if we want to attract more gamers. We also needed a bigger place, better settings to make that happen, the hunt for our next shop began.

2001

In late 2001, we opened our second Internet cafe with 50 seats on Ultimo Rd. Haymarket (2000). and it’s called Game Freaks. Again, shortly after it’s opened, the business was running at its full capacity, and we started to realise that our dream of building a business for gamers might have its merits. We started to work on the areas that we thought needed more improvements, after a year’s preparation, we were ready. Since this time it’s all about games and gamers, we need a name to reflect that. This is why instead of calling it an internet cafe, we want to call it a Cyber Cafe.

2003

In late 2003, we found a place that is more than 4 times bigger than Game Freaks, it's big enough for us to set up 150 seats, which is 2 times larger than the largest Internet cafe at that time. Since this time it's purely about games and gamers, we thought we should pick a new business name to go with it. Thus City Hunter is born, it's just such a cool name we all loved. After some hard work, the first City Hunter Cyber Cafe opened its door in November on Sussex St, Sydney (2000).

2004

One year later, the second City Hunter opened its door on George St, Haymarket (2000). It is in a prime position situated close to the largest transportation hub in Sydney, Central Station, it's in close proximity of Ultimo TAFE, University of Technology Sydney and also Sydney University.

2006

The year 2006 was a busy year for City Hunter, as we opened another two new locations, Burwood and Bondi Junction. The Burwood store is located right next to the train station and a minute walk from Westfield along Burwood's busiest street - Burwood Rd. For Bondi Junction, City Hunter was located on the end of the promenade across the road from Westfield. Again, another major transportation hub to ensure our customers can get to us with ease.

2007

Chatswood became City Hunter’s fifth location. Also along the promenade, City Hunter Chatswood is directly opposite Westfield and is close to the train station and bus terminal. It become one of the most popular places for youngsters instantly.

2009

After a decade of running internet cafes, our I.T. team had grown considerably, At the very beginning, we had only a single part time staff member. Now, we have a full team, capable of handling more than 500 PCs. Our I.T. team then started to provide I.T. services to our business partners. Cellbikes, as an example, was one of the many businesses our I.T. team began to looking after.

2011

Our I.T. service continues to grow. We are now managing a total of 600+ PCs, 100+ servers, 20+ networks and 10+ businesses. We have enough experience to expand our service offering to other small to medium businesses. It’s time for our I.T. team to branch out and provide I.T. services to both consumers and SMEs. We are very excited about this new opportunity.

2012

After many years of self improvements, we started to realise its also very important to look for talents outside of our existing business cycle, throughout the years, we engaged different talents to look are ways to bring our service to more gamers, businesses like PWC helped us a lot, we start to look for other means of growing our business, more importantly, the people who works in the business. We have draft our franchise model, studied employee ownership program, talked to venture capital, we have learnt a lot, we also had a list things that are unique to our business that we need to work on before we branch out again. Business consolidation is on the horizon.

2013

While we were consolidating our business, opportunity strikes us. WangYu, one of the biggest internet cafe chain in China, was looking for partners in Australia, who can help them to bring their next generation internet cafe business into Australia, we talked, and we connected, there are a lot areas we shared genuine value. We believed by helping WangYu, we are helping ourselves uplifting what we can do for gamers in Australia, the collaboration talk was very smooth. A joint venture is formed. A goal of bringing the next gen internet cafe experience to Australia gamers is set, a plan of renovate City Hunter’s flagship shop, and make it double the size to 1,200 sqm is drawn.

2014

Construction of the next gen internet cafe WangYu started, since this is the first big project, both WangYu and City Hunter had pour its best effort into. The project is divided into several stages, we want to keep the interruption on our existing customers to its minimum. We would also be adjusting or updating our services based on our customers feedbacks in every stage of the project.
